The Security Council is one of the six main organs of the United Nations (UN) and the premier global body for maintaining international peace and security. The Security Council plays its role in determining the existence of a threat to the world's peace, usually in the presence of an act of aggression. It seeks to solve disputes between parties and recommends the most appropriate methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can impose sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security. Aside from this last goal, the UN specifies three other purposes for the Security Council: fostering friendly relations between nations; cooperating in the solution of international problems and in the development of respect to human rights, and serving as a center that harmonizes the efforts of nations.

A Historical Security Council in MUN has the same goals as a regular Security Council; however, it deals with global events that have happened in the past, analyzing them, in order to navigate other optimal solutions that could have been adopted at the time of the event, changing history for the better.

Berlin Blockade and Airlift

After World War II, Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones, each one
controlled by the Soviet Union, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
As the alliance between the Western Allies (the United States, the United Kingdom,
and France) and the Soviet Union ended and friendly relations turned hostile, the

question of whether the western occupation zones in Berlin would remain under
Western Allied control or whether the city would be absorbed into Soviet-controlled
eastern Germany led to the first Berlin crisis of the Cold War.  The Berlin
Blockade occurred when Soviets blocked all rail, road and canal access to
the western zones of Berlin. Some 2.5 million civilians had no access to food,
medicine, fuel, electricity and other basic goods. The only way to go across the
borders was through an airlift that the Western Allies made, creating an air bridge
with planes to deliver vital supplies and relief to their citizens is Western Berlin.

The Historical Security Council seeks to find a new division for Germany so that a
peaceful solution to this conflict can be determined and possibly diminish the rising
tensions that prolonged the Cold War for decades. We strive to change history for
the better.
